There are many times when the phrase ‘separation of church and state’ is used in discussions relating to laws and politics. Where the conversation runs amuck is when the phrase and concept is, in error, attributed to the first amendment of the Constitution of the United States.
A recent case of this occurred in at least two articles posted on the Huffington Post in which the authors criticized Republican candidates by stating they didn’t believe the Constitution requires separation of church and state.
